Like many other gun enthusiasts, I was extremely disappointed with the release of Glock's .22. As a result, I'm looking for something to fill that gap. The Kel-Tec P17 popped up on my radar as more positive reviews started pouring in. I absolutely had to pick one up and see for myself.
This gun is incredibly cheap. It costs less than $200, which is a drop in the bucket if you like guns. It doesn't even mention the value you get out of it. It may look ugly and cheap (and it is), but it sure feels good when you shoot.
I was able to shred magazines without too much trouble. There were a few hiccups here and there, but nothing major. This was my biggest concern after seeing the price and the devastating Glock 44, but I'm happy to report that it's not an issue with the P17.
Now I have to mention that I don't like the look of the P17 at all. The seams where the polymer has been joined are visible and somewhat unpleasant. It just looks cheap. The good news is that her looks are the biggest negative, everything else is up.
One Gun Writer/instructor's Favorite Guns: Keltec P17– Bravo Concealment
I find the size to be good enough for a taller guy like me. The weapon is not difficult to handle due to its small size. It's easier to have consistent shots and not be miserable when shooting a small gun. It should be a treat for hands of all sizes.
It's also light, just under a kilo. The P17 is low-profile, with an overall length of less than 7 inches, making it a solid choice for concealed carry if you insist on carrying a .22. Personally, I had no desire to carry such a small caliber.
To me the P17 is just a great gun to pull out of the safe and use. The trigger appears to be usable. No grit or stickiness here. Reloading is pretty much the same as you're used to. The magazine size lives up to its name with a 16+1 capacity.
I got exactly what I wanted from the Kel-Tec P17. It's a fun little .22 that covers all the bases for a fun game. It's super affordable, works like a charm and feels pretty good in the hands. It's a good size for concealment if that's your thing, but it really shines when you're in snapping range. The graphics leave a lot to be desired, but looks are insignificant when looking at the big picture. Definitely worth buying if you have even a passing interest in a .22 gun. After the futuristic, high-capacity CP33, the more conventional P17 seemed, well, pedestrian. Turns out the gun was meant to be an affordable gun that anyone could enjoy.

At $200 MSRP (and retail price below that), Kel-Tec has succeeded with the first lens. The second goal - high performance to compete with more expensive competitors - was also well achieved.
The muzzle is factory threaded and the barrel nut can be replaced with the included 1/2×28 threaded extended adapter. A wrench is included with the gun to replace these parts. Included with the gun are three (!) 16 round non-drop magazines.
No magazine is included, but as it turns out, you don't need one: Kel-Tec engineers have achieved reliable feeding with every type of .22 LR—subsonic to supervelocity—without going through heavy-duty springs.
The barrel, stock and steel bolt are machined steel. The thin frame is sealed and bent. The unusually shaped slide is a steel stamping - it includes only the top and front action, while the sides are contained by the grip frame halves.

The grip frame is a clamshell (typical for Kel-Tec), although some design elements look atypical. For example, the ambidextrous magazine release is paddle style. The single-stage curved trigger breaks even at three pounds.
Dual springs provide symmetrical pressure on the hammer, reducing friction on the firing mechanism. When the weapon is ready to fire, a red cocked hammer indicator appears on the rear of the frame. The P17 is drop-proof forged.
I celebrate the lack of a magazine disconnect, as this "feature" forced on some pistols actually reduces the safety by complicating the release process. All controls are properly protected against accidental activation.
The pistol looks short because of the full size grip, but the barrel is 3.8 inches long. It balances easily in the hand for a deliberately aimed shot.

However, the proof of value is still the live fire execution. Kel-Tec put an extra year of development into the P17 to ensure it worked reliably with all types of ammunition. It was also quite accurate with a wide variety of loads.
Clear sights and a smooth trigger greatly aid accuracy. At 50 yards, the 8-inch steel was an easy target for the P17 and an equally easy IDPA carton at 100 yards. The operation was perfect.
The P17 is often seen as a direct competitor to the Taurus TX22. It's a third lighter, about 40% cheaper and comes with an extra charger.
The TX22 samples I saw were equally accurate and reliable, but all had the rear sights maximized for windage and still pulled slightly or significantly (with the suppressor installed) to the right.

One area where the TX22 wins is in suppressed fire with high velocity ammunition. The short breeches of the P17 are open on both sides so that the strong thumb of the hand can be warmed near the face of the breeches.
The same feature gives the P17 the advantage of a much higher and more stable hold, as the mounting inch is equal to the bore, not possible with
