You can browse our website from the main menu above or follow these links to some of our most popular categories. I used to work at a gun shop serving old customers. Retirees were our main source of customers and often came in looking for a self defense handgun. We would start with a Glock 19 or something similar, but the slide would be too heavy for most older hands to handle. Later we would move on to revolvers, but the 10+ pound triggers on those guns were too much. That's when I pulled them closer to see the KelTec PMR-30.

Kel Tec Pmr 30, Semi Automatic, .22 Magnum, 4.3\

Don't get me wrong, the PMR-30 is a great little gun for just about anyone. It's light (very light), has a great trigger pull, is fun to shoot, doesn't really recoil, and holds 30 rounds per magazine. What's not to love about a gun like this? All of these features make the Kel-Tec PMR-30 an excellent defensive handgun for people who cannot safely handle more conventional handguns. Also, of all the guns I've ever shot, it's probably my favorite to take to the range. Let me explain why.

The PMR-30 is a great example of Kel-Tec's innovative approach to firearms. The weapon is very light. Unloaded, it weighs just 14 ounces, less than a pound. In fact, a fully loaded PMR-30 weighs the same as an unloaded Glock 19 with an additional 30-round magazine loaded. One of the reasons for this light weight is the weapon's extensive use of polymers, including the sliding parts. The trigger is also light, breaking at just 3.5 pounds in our tests.

Getting a cartridge framed like the .22 Magnum to work in a magazine-fed semi-automatic pistol can be difficult. The edges of each cartridge can stack against each other, causing misfeed failure. The PMR30 solves this problem by building a feed guide that allows it to properly stack inside the magazine. Speaking of those magazines, while it's true that they can hold 30 rounds, most of them are difficult to load. The spring that feeds each shell into the firing chamber inside the PMR30 is very strong. Getting new rounds in the magazine is increasingly difficult, putting an effective limit of 20 or so rounds in the magazine before these springs wear out over time.

The innovation inside the Kel-Tec PMR-30 isn't limited to its magazine and what it's made of. The muzzle energy of .22 Magnum ammunition can vary widely, which means the PMR30's action must be able to reliably handle everything from low-powered plinking rounds to high-powered hunting and self-defense ammunition. The PMR30 uses a unique hybrid action system that allows it to function seamlessly with all types of .22 Magnum ammunition. At higher pressure loads, the barrel moves slightly rearward with a slide like a traditional locked breech action. When firing low-pressure charges, the PMR-30 is similar to firearms, except that the barrel does not move while the slide moves.

Picked Up A Kel Tec Pmr 30

The PMR30's controls are neatly laid out and, with one exception, placed where you'd expect them to be. The extended length of the .22 Magnum cartridge compared to, say, the 9mm means that the magazine must be longer from front to back than a magazine for most handguns. This in turn means the grip is longer from back to front than most pistols. This is where things get weird.

The KelTec PMR30's grip is unlike any pistol grip you've ever shot. The .22 Magnum round is very long from back to front for its length. This length makes it nearly impossible to wrap your fingers around the grip like you would with a more conventional pistol. Surprisingly, the large grip of this pistol does not affect its accuracy due to the very low recoil of the .22 Magnum.

Let's face it, the .22 Magnum is an unusual choice for a semi-automatic pistol, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Ammo is easy to find, cheap to shoot, and available in a wide variety of bullet types. It's also a surprisingly effective self-defense caliber. There are several different JHP rounds in the .22 magnum, with muzzle energy placing them between the .22LR and the 9mm. The bottom line is that if I took a PMR-30 with me on a hike in the woods or used it around my house as a self-defense weapon, I wouldn't compare myself to anything.

To test the accuracy of the KelTec PMR-30, we fired four five-shot groups of two different types of .22 Magnum ammunition at a target 15 yards away. We also recorded the average muzzle velocity for each shot using a Pro Chrony chronograph stopped five feet from the muzzle.

First Range Outing: Kel Tec Pmr 30

CCI MAXI-X 40 GRAIN FMJ Average Group Size: 1.58 inches Minimum Group Size: 1.13 inches Maximum Group Size: 1.88 inches Average Velocity: 1257 fps

Average group size: 1.77 inches Minimum group size: 1.30 inches Maximum group size: 2.36 inches Average velocity: 1540 fps

By comparison, a recent test of the popular 9mm compact defense pistol, the Glock 48, resulted in an average group size of 2.83 inches. In this review, we found that the KelTec PMR-30 can shoot and shoot well.

Now we come to the Achilles heel of this pistol. For a variety of reasons, projectile ammunition in a semi-automatic pistol is not as reliable as centerfire ammunition. Rimfire ammunition has a rim around the rim of the cartridge that contains a lined joint. The edges of each cartridge can be stacked on top of each other inside the magazine. This, in turn, can cause a power outage when firing your weapon. Also, in my experience, the priming mixture along the rim of the firing round is less reliable than priming in the center of the firing round.

This double whammy means that the Kel-Tec PMR-30 is not nearly as reliable as a semi-automatic pistol that uses a centerfire round like the 9mm. I fired 250 rounds through this gun and scored 6 hits. This means that every 50 rounds I had a reliability problem with the PMR-30. This may sound bad (and honestly, it is), but it is mitigated by two things.

Would I recommend the KelTec PMR-30? Yes, I would. This is a great weapon for the tri-specialist.

The first is people looking for a light gun to carry while hiking or backpacking. The PMR-30 is a bit large for everyday concealed carry, but for states where open carry is allowed, it would be a great gun set.
