Kel Tec P9 - When looking for a good example of America's most popular carry pistol, the Slimline 9, the Kel-Tech PF9 is a good place to start. It is one of the cheapest and quality pistols with proven performance. The Kel-Tec PF9 was one of the first ultralight 9mm pistols.

The gun has a polymer frame and a double action only trigger. The trigger is stiff but smooth, breaking at 6.5 pounds. It's not a striker-fired gun, but the PF9 uses a hammer.

Unloaded weight is a light 12.5 ounces. The gun is 5.25 inches long and 0.9 inches wide. The PF9 is small, but its seven-round magazine has an advantage over the six-round magazine of some smaller 9mm pistols.

When you compare the pistol to the same manufacturer's 8.5-ounce P3AT .380, which is 5.2 inches longer overall, the PF9 offers significant advantages with very little additional bulk. The big difference is in power.

The 9mm Luger has benefited greatly from advances in ammunition and projectiles, and the PF9 probably looks better today than when it was first introduced. The gun is traditional for a polymer frame gun. The silk treatment ensures good friction and adhesion.

The sights fit and the slide is thin and easy to holster. The double action trigger is smooth enough with a quick reset. The ejection port is large enough for administrative handling.

Activating a DAO trigger is very different from resolving a single-action trigger. Moving backwards and forwards after a reset requires coordination. The gun is fired and the trigger is given time to reset.

The DAO Kel-Tec is smooth enough for good shots in the moderate range. The scope is responsive and the gun is a real pocket gun. No manual safety; DAO trigger security feature. The locked bolt action is conventional. Removal is not difficult.

The PF9 is illustrated extensively fired with a variety of ammunition. These include the 124-grain Federal American Eagle FMJ, the 115-grain Federal Sinech training load, and the 124-grain Hornady KSPP+P. Interesting Hornady light with 100 grains proven reliable.

For a heavier bullet option, the 147-grain Sig Sauer Elite V Crown was tested. All loads were fed, chambered, fired and ejected without issue. Make sure your hands don't ride the slide with this gun. A short slide is easy to do with the 9mm and is a common reason for pistols of this size to fail.

As I was shooting rapidly at the 7 yard range, the PF9 displayed it well. Groups capable of personal protection, none left the kill zone. Also, this gun is harder to control than heavy guns, which is predictable. They can be difficult for inexperienced shooters to control. Controlling the +P load in the PF9 with a strong pistol grip isn't too difficult.

The issue of the magazine is positive in its work. It's not hard to get up to speed with practice. After combat shooting practice, it's a good idea to take a few long-range shots, confirm the zero, and check for absolute accuracy.

The DAO trigger is long but smooth and requires attention to detail. The Kel-Tec PF9 produced reasonable results, running 3 inches for five shots from the group's best tight shooting position, 4 inches at 15 yards.

The gun has never been fired and has given reliable performance. This is a true 9mm pocket pistol that is suitable for personal defense, concealed carry and home defense. If you can carry a larger and more maneuverable gun, you should. But the PF9 is a good choice for concealed carry.

The Kel-Tec P-3AT is an ultra-compact, semi-automatic pistol chambered in .380 ACP. It set the standard for many other firearms from Ruger, Taurus and others. In 2006, Kel-Tec improved upon the P3AT to create the KelTec PF9, one of the smallest and lightest 9mm pistols available on the market today. So as part of this KelTec PF9 review we decided to take a look at what Kel-Tec has changed and what the new iteration is all about.

The PF-9 is a compact single-shot 9mm in every sense of the word. It is very suitable for concealed carry and can also be used as a pocket gun. The PF-9 is just a double-action (DAO) forged pistol, not a striker-fired one. The DAO feature means you have to pull the hammer back every time you pull the trigger to fire the gun. This means the trigger has more travel than most guns in our test. Although the trigger on our test gun required a lot of travel to fire the gun, it didn't take much effort to move it, weighing just over 6 pounds.

The small size and light weight of the PF-9 are definitely two of its biggest strengths. Weighing in at just 12.6 ounces, it was the lightest gun in our test. It's also the thinnest gun we've tested. The capacity of the magazine is seven bullets, and the gun has only one magazine. The back strap is interchangeable to accommodate different hand sizes. As a result, it felt a little thin in my hands.

The front of the PF-9 has a short piece of Picatinny rail, which is a nice feature in a gun of this size. That part of the rail comes in handy if you decide to mount a light or laser on this gun. The sight on the PF-9 is three-dot, and the rear sight is adjustable for tilt and elevation, another feature rarely found in such a small pistol. Disassembling the PF-9 requires you to use the worn case to pull out the slide stop. Other than that, the PF-9's operation is similar to that of other regular 9mm pistols.

Kel-Tec may be known for its innovation, but it is not known for its ergonomics. The PF-9's small size and light weight are great for concealment, but it's difficult to shoot the gun for any length of time. I put 300 rounds through the gun to test its reliability (more on that later), and had to stop every 50 rounds to ease the pain in my shooting hand. The thin profile and small size of the PF-9 means that there isn't much room to carry this gun, and its light weight absorbs very little recoil.

Getting good hits on target is no problem with the PF-9. The gun is not even operated. I had no problems with the long trigger travel, and other controls like the magazine release are where you'd expect them to be.

The PF-9 was in the middle of the other guns in our accuracy testing, so the short sight radius didn't affect its ability to throw rounds on target. However, follow-up shots with the PF-9 were slightly slower than with the other pistols in our test, as I needed extra time to adjust to the recoil of each round.

Kel-Tech definitely thinks outside the box and they are ahead of where the market is going.
