In April. 21, 1989, SR-71 #61-7974, also known as Ichiban, took off from Kadena Air Base (AB) on a mission.

The Story Of The Sr 71 “ichi Ban:” The Blackbird That Was Buried At Sea

Pilot Lt. was in control. Col. Dan House and RSO Blair Bozek. As #974 accelerated to three times the speed of sound, the left-hand compressor froze, the port engine shut down immediately, and the explosion resulted from failure to send shrapnel through the vital hydraulic lines.

Lt. Col. House successfully lowered #974, descending to over ten thousand feet. Both crew members ejected safely and were quickly rescued by local fishermen in the water below.

The photos in this article (originally posted by our friend Linda Sheffield Miller on her lovely Facebook page Habubrat) show the wreckage of SR-71 #974 recovered from the bottom of the South China Sea in 1989 and moving toward Kadena AB.

Former US Air Force (USAF) Tech Rep Beale Jack M Levine explained to The Aviation Geek Club: “When the US Navy lifted the 974 overboard, the TEB chemical mixed with oxygen to ignite the engines caused the flames to erupt. . When Puff the Magical Dragon was lifted out of the water from around SR-71. The chemical created high flash temperatures causing engines to overheat. This was necessary because JP7 fuel would not survive without the mixture. The TEB was stored in separate tanks to allow up to 16 guns to start the engines when unstarts occurred or the burners burned out.

Even With All The Secrecy, The Sr 71 Spy Plane Was Damned Hard To Hide

"The tanks appear to have exploded as the photos show the damaged SR-71. The white box nave was the guidance unit. The top glass window was the star tracker platform for looking at the sky. The stars. We call this guide team from Star Wars R2D2. It was motionless like a robot. The crew room was behind the fuel tank. It was loaded onto the plane after it was in front too."

According to former USAF CMSgt (Ret) Roberto Garnica, "The aircraft observed and reported impacting the diverted water, all heavy components passing through their upper support structure - note the landing gear coming off the top of the wing! The engines breached all contracts and penetrated the upper nacelle structure!"

"SR-71 #61-7974 is back to where it left off months ago," said former Blackbird Col. RSO (ret) Don Emmons Richard H. Graham's SR-71 was commemorated in the book Blackbird Stories, Stories and Legends. "Whilst the Accident Investigation Board was a good place to investigate the incident, it did nothing for Det 1's morale. Imagine the satisfaction and great joy of another day's work. Then, seeing it every day was ruined. As a result, when the Board completed its investigation, the damage had to be removed as soon as possible. Burial at sea Which seemed like the best option.

Thanks to the help of the United States Navy, the shells were transported to port and transferred to a waiting ship.

Emmons concludes: “The remains of SR-71 #974 were buried at sea with full military honors. The incident took place at 1157 hours on Christmas Eve 1989. The coordinates placed it hundreds of kilometers from Okinawa. The final resting place was in 25,597 meters of water in an area known as the Mariana Trench.”

Flight Of The Blackbird: The How, What And Why Of The Incredible Sr 71

The story of this event is very interesting and is described by Brian Schull in his book Sled Driver.

“I was flying an SR-71 out of RAF Mildenhall in England, and there was a man in the back, Walt Watson; We were returning from a mission in Europe and the Iron Curtain when we received a radio message from home. Three minutes into our flight over Denmark, we heard that a small RAF base in England had requested an SR-71 fly-past. The air cadet commander there was a former Blackbird pilot, and he thought watching the mighty SR-71's low approach would be an inspiring moment for the youth. No problem, we happily did. After the plane flew quickly over the North Sea we continued to find a small airfield.

Walter had lots of fancy swimming gear in the back seat and he started taking me to the field. Descending at a slow pace, we found ourselves in a light mist above dense forest. Like early WWII British airfields, what we're looking for is a small tower and small buildings around it. Walter told me we were close and I should see
